Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is CulturedCare™ Probiotic Gum with BLIS K12™?

A: CulturedCare Probiotic Gum with BLIS K12 is the only chewing gum dosage form of a patented oral probiotic strain – S. salivarius K12. It is also the first and only probiotic gum in Canada to be approved & licensed for therapeutic use by Health Canada.

Q: What is BLIS K12™?

A: BLIS is an abbreviation for Bacteriocin-Like Inhibitory Substance. BLIS is the naturally occurring component of certain strains of micro-organisms (probiotics) which control undesirable and disease-causing bacteria and promote oral health. BLIS K12 is the special BLIS probiotic strain derived from S. salivarius.

Q: What is “S. salivarius”?

A: S. salivarius are naturally occurring bacteria that normally reside in the mouths of healthy people. Their presence in the mouth is one indication of healthy immune function.

Q: Who discovered BLIS K12™?

A: This unique probiotic was discovered by Professor John Tagg, a microbiologist and scientist at the University of Otaga in New Zealand.

Q: What does BLIS K12™ do?

A: BLIS K12 “colonizes” and lives in the mouth and throat. It stimulates the throat’s natural immune defense system and protects the mouth, ears, nose and throat against infection.  BLIS K12 specifically controls infection by Streptococcus pyogenes, pathogenic bacteria that cause strep throat which can lead to rheumatic fever and scarlet fever. BLIS K12 also protects against otitis media (earache), halitosis (bad breath), sore throats, thrush and oral candida yeast infection.

Q: What is the probiotic potency of each piece of CulturedCare™ Probiotic Gum with BLIS K12™?

A: Every piece is made with 20 mg of BLIS K12 at production. This potency level is approved by Professor Tagg as the optimal daily intake for infection protection. It  provides a minimum of 500 million colony forming units (cfu) of BLIS K12 at production.

Q: Can chewing CulturedCare™ Probiotic Gum with BLIS K12™ gum protect against strep throat?

A: Yes. Professor Tagg’s studies show that chewing CulturedCare Probiotic Gum with BLIS K12  helps protect against strep throat infections by providing the friendly probiotic bacteria that fight strep infections.

Q: Will CulturedCare™ Probiotic Gum with BLIS K12™  prevent bad breath?

A: Yes. Bad breath is frequently caused by an overgrowth of unfriendly bacteria in the mouth and throat. Regularly chewing one piece of CulturedCare Probiotic Gum daily with BLIS K12 will control production of these odour-causing bacteria.

Q: Is CulturedCare™ Probiotic Gum with BLIS K12™ useful in promoting healthy teeth and gums?

A: Yes. Professor Tagg’s research shows that CulturedCare TM Probiotic Gum with BLIS K12 improves oral health including the health of teeth and gums.

Q: How many pieces of CulturedCare™ Probiotic Gum with BLIS K12™  should be chewed daily?

A: Chewing one piece a day is adequate for most people. However, if you sense the early signs of a sore throat, chew up to three pieces a day. Also, if you plan to travel by airplane and want to give an added boost to your infection resistance, Professor Tagg suggests chewing 3 pieces six hours prior to boarding the plane.

Q: To ensure optimal colonization, what time of day is best for chewing CulturedCare™ Probiotic Gum with BLIS K12™?

A: Professor Tagg recommends chewing one piece a day ideally at bedtime, after brushing teeth. There are no cavity-causing ingredients in CulturedCare Probiotic Gum with BLIS K12. All of the ingredients actually promote healthy teeth and gums.

Q: How many minutes do I need to chew CulturedCare™ Probiotic Gum to get the benefits?

A: Studies have shown that chewing CulturedCare Probiotic Gum for 5-10 minutes  will help to populate your mouth with the friendly BLIS K12  probiotic micro-organisms.

Q: How many days will it take before CulturedCare™ Probiotic Gum with BLIS K12™ is “at home” in my mouth?

A: Researchers at the University of Otago in New Zealand found that, typically, oral colonization of the friendly BLIS K12 probiotic occurs in 3-7 days.

Q: After using a package of CulturedCare™ Probiotic Gum with BLIS K12™ how often would I have to take it?

A: Ideally continue to chew one piece every day. If that is not feasible, a minimal maintenance is: Every two weeks, chew one piece a day for 3 or 4 days in a row.

Q: What interferes with BLIS K12™ in a negative way?

A: Primarily antibiotics and antibacterial mouthwashes reduce the healthy flora in our mouths.

Q: What interacts with BLIS K12™ in a positive way?

A: Fermented foods such as yogurt are another source of beneficial bacteria.

Q: Will herbal anti-bacterial agents such as oregano oil reduce the activity of these bacteria?

A:  Any broad-spectrum antibacterial agent used topically in the mouth can potentially interfere with the normal flora in the mouth.

Q: What sweeteners are used in CulturedCare™ Probiotic Gum with BLIS K12™?

Stevia extract, xylitol and isomalt are used as the only sweeteners. All three of these naturally sweet substances are derived from plants. Hundreds of published studies have shown that they do not contribute to tooth decay or blood sugar fluctuations. Researchers have concluded that they have multiple health benefits including the prevention and reduction of cavities, dental plaque, bone loss, ear infections, and oral candida yeast infections.

Q: How is the live probiotic bacteria in CulturedCare™ Probiotic Gum with BLIS K12™ protected from heat?

A: During every step of the production process of the CulturedCare Probiotic Gum with BLIS K12, the medicinal ingredient – BLIS K12 probiotic – is protected from heat and moisture, the two environmental factors that can reduce probiotic activity.
